In a handful of months the Nevell Group, Inc. delivered the framing and finish work for the expanded Del Amo Fashion Center where interior spaces are bathed in daylight by a 102,000 square foot ceiling with curvilinear clerestory and skylights, some 65 feet above the finished floor. Joining the day lighting elements are expansive curved soffits, soffit drops, and very tight floor-to-floor heights. Every part of the ceiling curved, some so slight the curve was barely visible, while others rose sharply as they circled around an opening.
After the Nevell Group’s BIM Department incorporated design packages from three different Architects into one cohesive design, they shared and coordinated their building information model with subject matter experts like Radius Track Corporation, specialists in complex framing design and manufacturing. Radius Track® reviewed the contractor’s BIM and designed a framing system in 3D to create the geometry of specific curves in the ceiling design. Radius Track Design Technologists worked closely with Nevell Group’s engineer to deliver an efficient, cost effective solution that met structural requirements. Once shop drawings were approved, Radius Track® accelerated their delivery timeline by adding another manufacturing team to expedite CNC fabrication of the custom framing profiles. And this customer centric support extends well beyond the manufacturing floor.
During construction, installers had concerns about what some of the curves were intended to do and how to install the custom framing. The Design Technologist from Radius Track traveled to the job-site and worked with the installation team. First he listened to their questions and made certain he understood their concerns. Then he explained the framing design, product sequencing, color-coded nomenclature and walked through the installation instructions for specific assemblies. “The product was spot on and their framing design delivered the complex geometry of the design intent,” said Nevell Group Sr. Estimator/Project Manager, Franciso Sanchez. “They have the expertise and technology to deal with all aspects of complex framing. They even provided our field leaders with 3D files in any format needed for their tablets so the guys in the field could see how the framing was to go together.”
