Encore is thrilled to announce AARP as a 10th Anniversary Presenting Sponsor. This sponsorship will support our anniversary year celebrations and provide resources for us to offer a once-in-a-lifetime performance opportunity on the stage of DAR Constitution Hall on May 13, 2017!  We are so grateful for this partnership for many reasons.  AARP’s financial support will contribute to our annual operating costs, tuition scholarships, professional conductor fees, equipment costs, and staffing.
Most importantly, this sponsorship ensures that Encore will continue to provide free concerts to the community.  AARP advocates new discoveries and new possibilities at any age -- in perfect sync with Encore's mission to provide an excellent and artistic environment to older adults. Thank you to AARP and to all of our singers and friends of Encore for your continued support.

From Mary Spencer
Executive Director
The Encore Office is a flurry of activity getting ready for our spring concerts. The phones are ringing and we are happy to have a chance to chat with our singers as they finalize their plans for the DAR Concert and also for the 10th Anniversary Party at the Mansion on O Street. We hope to have many of our singers join us for this special evening as we prepare for the next day's "adventure" - moving 800 singers on and off the stage at the DAR Concert Hall. Hold onto your hats! Come and join us at the party! Click here for all the details! I hope to see you there! There is no better time to be an Encore singer!

named in honor of Encore's Founder and Artistic Director

We would like to thank the donors who have already made a gift to this special fund in honor of Jeanne. We will announce the progress of this fund at the DAR Constitution Hall Concert. Gifts will, of course, be welcomed and appreciated after the concert season is completed. To be included in the list of supporters in the Spring Concert Program, please make sure we receive your gift by March 30.  No gift is too large or too small!  If you'd like to make your gift today, you can click here to be directed to the giving page. Your participation is what matters. Your gift will help new singers just like you discover Encore's program and experience the joy that singing can bring to their lives. And, we know Jeanne will be touched by your support. Thank you!

Have you been singing with Encore for 10 years?
Then we want to hear from you!

If you were a singer during Encore's first year, we want to hear from you. If you sang in the Chorales of Myerberg, Smithsonian, Langston Brown or Goodwin House back in the fall of 2007 or the spring of 2008, please email amy.colhoun@encorecreativity.org and let us know. After all, you are celebrating an anniversary, too!

Donor Profile
Howard and Lilian Smith

Howard and Lilian Smith are dedicated to Encore. At aged 88 and 93 respectively, there seems to be no stopping their energy or commitment to enjoying all that life has to offer. In a recent conversation with Howard and Lilian, we decided to dig a bit deeper to find out what they love about Encore and why supporting Encore is a priority in their lives.
Howard and Lilian met in 1949 in Yokohama, Japan. Howard was completing his three-year stint in the Army and Lilian was working for the Army as a secretary to the Commanding Officer of Communications.
Lilian was born in London, England. Her family lived in Berlin, Germany for three years and ultimately moved to Tokyo, Japan and then relocated to Yokohama. The war years were spent away from the city and she lived in the western part of Japan. After the war, Lilian, her mother and brother returned to Yokohama. Prior to the war, she attended a Japanese school to learn language; then to an English school as a boarder. When the school closed because of the impending war, she attended and then graduated with only three other students from St. Maur’s Convent School. It was a difficult time for Lilian and her family during this period but she came through unscathed and with an upbeat look at life.
Howard is from Northampton, Massachusetts. After his occupational service, he went to a commercial college and then spent time in the Air Force during the Korean War, which eventually led to the employment as a Financial Management Officer in the Department of State and on to the Foreign Service.

After a five-year courtship through letter writing, Howard and Lilian were married in Tokyo, Japan in 1955. Lilian, at the time, was working for the Danish Maersk Shipping Company. After her arrival in the United States she worked for the Air Force for a short time. Lilian eventually entered the Foreign Service as an Administrative Assistant.

They have been married for sixty-one years and their marriage has been filled with travel and adventure as they have worked in Japan, Congo (Brazzaville), Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Korea. After their retirement in 1984, they continued working as reemployed annuitants in the Department, including work in New Zealand, Thailand, China, The Philippines, Sudan, and Costa Rica until 2010. They lived in McLean, Virginia, for 22 years prior to moving into Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads in 2010.

These days, you can find Howard singing in his Baritone voice every Friday in the Encore Chorale. In the seven years that he has been a member of the chorale, there has been rarely a time when he has missed a rehearsal. Lilian is now an enthusiastic audience member smiling from the front row during concerts. She sang soprano with Encore for six years.

It was such a treat to discover that Howard has been a performer for most of his life. He started singing at the age of seven accompanied on the piano by his mother who was an entertainer. Fun-loving and filled with stories, we got to hear about his years of being involved in the arts and even his stint as a movie extra in Japanese films. He has been in Goodwin House’s annual “Spring Fling” for five years, creating production acts, developing shows, and enjoying his creation of “The Johnny Cash Trio.” Among his favorite songs which are included in his shows are, “It Had to Be You” and “Somebody Loves Me” – dedicated to Lilian. Howard is fortunate to have DVDs of his shows for them to look back on in their “elder years”.

The social aspects of Encore are also a real plus for Howard and Lilian. They believe that there is something truly special about gathering together with friends to work hard to present professional concerts to their audiences. “That hard work bonds you with the other singers because you are working toward a common goal. Our conductors Jeanne and Jeff expect dedication, persistence, and hard work. They know how to get the best out of us for each rehearsal and performance. There is a feeling of great accomplishment at the end of each semester.”

“Encore has given us the opportunity to continue to be involved in singing at the same level we have enjoyed throughout our lives. The program allows us to sing a variety of music that we love, and each semester offers new music and a new challenge. We feel so lucky to have discovered Encore,” said Howard.

Howard and Lilian are committed to generously supporting Encore financially because they want to ensure that the program is around for the long-term. “What Encore offers is valuable to our Senior community and we want to do our part to make sure that the program is here to stay. We feel that for those of us who love Encore and are able to contribute, we should make it a priority. It is truly a worthy cause and we are convinced that being involved with Encore has helped us to stay healthy and active. We know Encore counts on our support to provide something that has enriched the lives of so many of our friends. We want to ensure Encore’s future for all of our current singers and for the thousands of new singers who have yet to discover Encore.”

Howard and Lillian enjoy good food, great conversation, theater and music. They have been generous donors to Encore since 2010, giving to support the annual operating budget. Most recently, they made a gift to the Jeanne Kelly Founder’s Fund in honor of one of their favorite people, Jeanne Kelly. Encore is truly thankful for all that Howard and Lilian have done for Encore.
